I have an elk story. A place I lived for a bit near the California coast had a story of a mythical giant elk that lived there, but was rarely seen. One night a friend and I were driving on a really misty night when we saw something crossing the road and came to a stop. It was an elk bigger than a moose. It was gigantic. It stepped over a barbed wire fence easily with room to spare. Then it slowly disappeared into the mist. We were in such awe of what we had just seen we just sat parked on the road for awhile. I still to this day don't know for sure what I saw. Elk aren't supposed to get that big...
wow, that is a beautiful encounter, thank you for sharing! who knows who that creature actually was? stepping over a barbed wire without jumping sounds pretty hard!
it sounds more like the spirit of the forest from Princess Mononoke!
Yes, it was amazing. If someone else hadn't been with me and seen it too, I might have doubted what I witnessed. It stopped and looked right at us before stepping over the fence. What was funny was we were leaving the guys house who had told us the story of the giant elk. He had actually spent years trying to spot it. He was so frustrated when we told him. I guess sometimes you have to not look for things to appear. But whatever it was...an elk god?... I feel blessed to have seen it. It was magical.
Wow. That was eloquent and dreamy and beautiful to read. Thank you. I've always dreamt of living in that way. My reality has been far,far different, but the time will come, I can feel it's close. Though where you are sounds pretty special, some places will take more to restore. You just gave me a lot to dream about. I am in southern Oregon, and for now at least, this is where I feel I am meant to stay. But what you are doing is so important, and you appear to be doing it with a very wide lens. Very inspiring. I wish you all the best and all my love. How beautiful. One question though, why resist the urge for philosophical debates? They can be so much fun.
I felt most attracted to places that needed a lot more to restore until I stumbled upon Elkenmist. But there is a lot to restore in ourselves and the people we draw to us as we try to understand and observe and enter in relationship with the land!
Personally, I have loved philosophical debates a bit too much and I find it easy to get lost in them. I am trying to get my attention to dwell more in the other parts of my body than whatever is generated by language in my head.
I feel that it's important to proof every philosophical debate by what impact it has or can have on human and more than human creatures. Does it help to grow food or love or connection? does it spur some sort of action, whether it might be a ritual sort of action or something deemed more prosaic?
Oh I cannot wait to come visit you friend. These images are so dreamy and your words are so sweet. I am looking forward to when you have a whole crew supporting yourself and eachother.
it was so heart warming, beautiful and inspiring to read about your vision. I hope to visit someday, spend some time here and share/contribute however I can.
